Jeffreys Bay – As the JBay Winterfest presented by Woodlands Dairy kicks in tomorrow, 8 July, one of the first events in this festival prepares itself for a big two days. The Oakley X-Over, a ‘cross’over’ multi-discipline event, has proven to be popular amongst invited athletes as well as the public, and this year promises to be another tumultuous affair.
The podium finishers from last year, the inaugural year of the event, are all back in the tournament and ready for another big tussle for a top 3 spot. In 2014 the event was won by Butch James from Raynard Tissink and Greg Minnaar, with all three back in the contest this year for another crack at it.
James, Tissink and Minnaar, along with Bob Skinstad, Dale Steyn, David Miller, John Smit, Jordy Smith, Kevin Evans, Ruan De Smidt, Ryan O’Connor, Garreth ‘Soldier Boy” McLellan and Ryan Sandes are all returning to the competition, while Lance Isaacs and Dale Steyn are the new faces. Wihann Kotze from Plettenberg is the public wildcard, while former World Championship Tour surfer Tom Whitaker from Australia is the sponsor wildcard.
“It’s going to be another big year for the Oakley X-Over,” said Bob Skinstad, one of the most engaging characters at last year’s event. While Bob was entertaining to be around, he was also fiercely competitive, placing third in the surfing event and fifth overall. “I’m planning on going hard this year in all aspects of the event, and am keen to see who is going to be up for the challenge.”
Bob has been training hard to improve his fifth placing from last year.
The event will kick off on the morning of Thursday 9 July with the Mountain Bike Race. This will start at the Impala MTB Trails at 9am.
This will be followed by the Golf event, set to tee off at 1pm at the St Francis Links.
Friday 10 July will see the surf event take place at the Lower Point in Jeffreys Bay. The fun will commence at 9am, and the conditions look promising for the athletes.
“There’s going to be a bit of wind around for the Oakley X-Over this year, but that’s just going to make things more interesting,” said Oakley Sports Marketing Manager and X-Over founder Seth Hulley.
“The invited athletes are all pretty hardcore, so a little bit of wind won’t slow anyone down nor affect their performances. It’ll be a bit of a challenge at the surf event, but that’s exactly what we want.”
The Oakley X-Over prize giving will take place at the Jolly Dolphin on Friday evening. Before the prize giving there will be an auction on behalf of the Supertubes Surfing Foundation.
The athletes competing in the Oakley X-Over, as well as Oakley South Africa, have managed to secure some amazing items to be auctioned, and the Supertubes Surfing Foundation will benefit greatly from their efforts.
The items include:
– A Trek Superfly FS6 Mountain Bike (value over R30k).
– An authentic current rugby players’ jersey, framed and signed by the current Springbok squad.
– A new surfboard, signed by all the X-Over athletes.
– 2 x rugby balls, signed by all the X-Over athletes.
– 2 x surf rash vests from this year’s X-Over, signed by all athletes.
– 2 x MTB top from this year’s X-Over, signed by all the athletes.
The auction is open to the public, and all are invited to attend and participate for this good cause. The Supertubes Surfing Foundation was founded some 15 years ago by the JBU to maintain the beaches and protect the last remaining sand dunes along the Supertubes beachfront.
