JBay – with just two days to go before the start of the 2016 edition of the Oakley X Over, the athletes have started arriving in town. JBay is already buzzing, with the JBay Winterfest presented by Woodlands Dairy in full swing, and the high-profile celebrity sportsmen are adding to the excitement.

Athletes like Butch James, Ruan De Smidt, Raynard Tissink and Greg Minnaar will join the likes of Bob Skinstad, John Smit, Jean De Villiers and Australian wildcard Tom Whittaker for two days of intense competition in this fast-paced cross-over event.

The Oakley X Over will get going on Wednesday morning at the St Francis Links Golf Course, where the competitors will kick off with a focused nine holes of golf. Thereafter, it’s on to the bikes for the Mountain Bike race in JBay.

“One of the things I’m most looking forward to is not coming last in the golf,” commented Ryan ‘Sandman’ Sandes. “Apparently Kerim Fitz-Gerald is just as bad as me when it comes to golf, so I’m very happy he’ll be there.”

Finally it’ll be over to the Lower Point in JBay on Thursday for the Surfing Competition. This segment of the event is always popular and a great meeting place for the celebrities and the public. The swell forecast looks like there are going to be some small but very fun waves at Lower Point on Thursday, perfect for some of the less experienced athletes in the mix. Bob Skinstad is always one of the standouts in this leg, putting his surfing skills out there for the assembled judges and spectators. “Lower Point in JBay is a great wave, and I always look forward to a paddle down there,” said Skinstad of the venue.

Greg Minnaar, who placed second in the Surfing Competition, is always a danger man out there, and could easily turn the tables on the rest of the competitors with a big result in the surf. The greatest Downhill MTB racer of all time is fearless in the surf no matter what the conditions.
