Jeffreys Bay – A sudden rush of entries into the JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA has seen the list of prospective surfers grow to 36. The event can only host 24 surfers, and one of them will win that slot into the WSL Championship Tour’s JBay Open, along with a minimum prize of US$9000 (ZAR109k). The JBay Open is the anchor event of the JBay Winterfest.
The JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA has a strict policy of No Entry No Invite. With a few big names still missing from the entry list, it will be interesting to see which of our top surfers do not enter this prestigious event. The entries close on 11 May 2015, and the tournament has a waiting period of 1 – 12 June.
The latest round of entries include last year’s winner Dylan Lightfoot. A local surfer, Dylan has proven himself amongst the best surfers in the country by winning the event and advancing into the JBay Open main event last year. He will no doubt be looking for the double win on his home turf. “Most people say that it will be a dream come true to get into the JBay Open, but for me it is more of a dream surfing Supers with just three other guys out,” said Dylan of this year’s event. “It is my favourite event on the South African surfing calendar.”

Dale Staples from St Francis Bay is another surfer who knows his way around the Supertubes lineup, and has shown his worth against some big international competitors. Dale was the highest placed South African surfer in the 2012 Billabong Pro JBay, defeating John John Florence along the way. He will definitely come into the event as a favourite. Former WSL Championship Tour Ricky Basnett from The Bluff is another surfer who can turn heads in any surf conditions. Whenever Ricky paddles out at Supers he turns heads with his fast but relaxed surfing and progressive aerial moves. A previous winner of the Mr Price Pro in Durban, Ricky is no stranger to the podium either, and is a danger man at Supertubes. Current man-of-the-moment and JBU Supertrial poster boy Mikey February has also thrown his entry into the mix, and it’s a cracker. Mikey recently finished runner-up in the inaugural Martinique Pro France – a QS 3000 rated event. The result saw Mikey race up 61 places on the WQS to number 16 on the latest rankings. Mikey also pocketed US10 000 (ZAR120 000) and bolstered his confidence in the process. February is a stand out at Supers and will be gunning for a final place and a slot in the JBay Open. Nixon has come onboard as a supporting sponsor, and will be awarding some Nixon product as prizes. A Tangent Sport watch valued at R6,000 will be awarded to the surfer who scores the best tube ride of the event, and a Nixon Blaster will be going to the event winner.
