With just eight hours of surfing left to run in the JBay Open ASP surfing event, the contest organisers are rubbing their hands in delight at the giant waves forecast for the weekend. Saturday promises to be one of those rare big and perfect days at Supertubes, and Sunday looks to be just as ideal, but slightly smaller. There is some strong wind and cold weather predicted as well, but everyone knows that the good waves come with slightly adverse weather. It’ll be a rare treat to watch the best surfers in the world surfing one of the best waves in the world during a large and perfect swell, so bring your warm clothes, maybe bring a blanket, grab some coffee and get your seats early.

Local surf forecaster Spike from Wavescape has had a good look at the wave models and has released the following statement. “A giant wind fetch sandwiched between a huge low pressure and a big high has moved into place South West of Jeffreys Bay and is rapidly approaching. Two cold fronts hit on Friday and Saturday and the swell gets bigger and bigger, with strong chance of 8-10ft sets smacking Supertubes on Saturday, and Sunday looking peachy 4-6′ and clean.” JBay Winter Fest Facebook page is broadcasting video updates of Spike’s swell predictions as we lead into the finals.

It’s looking like the event will definitely go on Saturday and possibly Sunday. For more on the JBay Open go to the event page  and to watch the webcast you can find the live feed on the ASP website.

Saturday will also see the JBay Mountain Bike Open event take place on Arthur Joubert’s purpose-built track. The fierce weather forecast is going to add to the fun, providing a whole new bunch of challenges for the riders. There are a number of distances in this event, including 20km, 40km, 60km and 85km routes spanning several private farms in the area. Registration for the Mountain Bike Open will be at the Wimpy in the Fountains Mall today (Friday) from 6-9pm and on Saturday morning from 6-7am. There will also be burgers for sale after the race. JBay Coffee Co. will be selling coffee on Saturday morning during registration and throughout the day at the start/finish area. Jeffreys Bay Sport has more information on registration for this event.

The Music Festival will continue over the weekend, with bands and sounds jamming the Jolly Dolphin the whole weekend. Friday night the bands taking the stage are The Lucas Reunion and Jeremy Loops, and on Saturday the town will rock to the sounds of 7th Son and Taxi Violence. The Music Festival details and ticket sales on the Music Festival page.

The Flamingo Trail run will take place on Sunday 20 July and is all set for a midday low tide start. There are three distances, the 2km Youngsters Run, the 12km and the 30km for the experienced trail runner, and all races start at Supers surf break. Pre-entries available on Entry Time.
